Travel Team Requirements

Schedule ‘B’ – approved December 2007

(revised: February 2009)

Collingwood United Soccer Club

Rules, Regulations and Guidelines for Travel Team Coaching Staff and Players

Team Organization and Structure

1. Each rep or travel team is to have a qualified Head Coach.
2.It is recommended that each team have one designated qualified Assistant Coach or Manager to share the coaching duties and team responsibilities. Teams must have a designated Team Manager. The focus of the relationship should be on shared responsibilities, talents and mutual respect. At least one of the team’s coaches must attend each scheduled practice or game and prepare the team properly. It is the team head coach’s responsibility to ensure that a competent, fully informed designate attends if required.
3. Coaches will receive a list of prospective players. It is the responsibility of the coaching staff to notify each player or guardian as to date, time and place for each try-out. Official try-outs will begin after registration deadline.
4. There must be a minimum of four try-outs offered, five are recommended. No player may be cut until after his/her 2nd try-out. Matters such as attendance due to temporary or ongoing conflicts with other activities should be made known to the coaches as early as possible.
5. Each candidate must attend at least 2 try-outs before being considered for the team. Any player who does not make this requirement and still wants to be considered for the team must make representation to the board via the VP for Travel for adjudication.
6. Coaches must conduct try-outs in such a manner as to get an honest and complete evaluation of a player’s ability and potential prior to any selection. An evaluation sheet will be provided for each player and should be kept up to date by the coaching staff. Any player/candidate may ask for a copy of his evaluation form. The original should be kept by the Coach. The purpose of the evaluation form is to indicate the relative strengths or weaknesses of a player or candidate to help him/her improve. It also gives coaches a standard for evaluation.
7. Coaches have the sole responsibility for evaluating and choosing their teams.
8. Travel team coaches are to communicate to other affected coaches any underage players trying out for his/her team.
9. At the coach’s discretion, rosters are to be left open to accommodate players trying out for the older rep teams until all the try-outs are completed.
10. Where a player is attempting to make an older aged team, the Coach needs to assess the role that player would have on his/her team – starter or sub. Keeping in mind where that player would benefit the most in the way of playing time, social development and skill development.
11. All players who have completed their minimum number of try-outs and are to be cut from the team must be notified that they should not attend any more practices. Players should not be singled out and cut in a way that is embarrassing or demeaning. Those players who do not make the team should expect some reason for not being chosen as indicated on their evaluation form. Coaches MUST appreciate the sensitivity of this issue and if possible, speak to the parent/guardian as well.
12. A player who has been selected may not be ejected from a team except for persistent or serious misconduct or unsatisfactory attendance. The Club VP for Travel must be part of any such process.
13. Coaches must act in a professional, courteous and decent manner at all times when working with their players. Foul language is unacceptable from coaches or players alike. Team mates, opposition players, staff, parents and referees must be accorded appropriate respect. Coaches must not tolerate any such misconduct from their players. Players, and their respective parents and family members, must understand their responsibilities as representatives of the Club and of Collingwood whenever they are in uniform at the field or visiting another community.
14. Travel Team Coaches must respect the needs of our sponsors and cooperate by forwarding game reports to the Administrator.  Media release forms will be given to Coaches, these are to be filled out and submitted to the Administrator within 24 hours of completion of every game or tournament. The Administrator will forward to the appropriate media representatives.
15. Game SHEETS must be forwarded within 24 hours. Coaches will be allowed 1 grace period
Per season before they will be held responsible for any incurred fines.
16. The Club will be responsible for mailing the game sheets to the appropriate division.
17. All paperwork required to register players and teams will be submitted through our Club Office.
18. Coaches will be provided with up to date medical information on all players.
19. All coaches are responsible to collect any equipment and return it to the Club at the end of the season. Player books are also to be turned into the office at the end of each season.
20. Coaches are responsible to provide the Club administrator, by an agreed date, with a list of all players who have been cut from their team and who wish to play house league as well as the names of any travel team players who wish to remain on the house league draft list.
21. Private funding or sponsors for individual teams are allowed. Any donations for equipment or tournaments for these teams are to be made through the Club. If the additional donation is not made by the original team sponsor their approval must be received.
22. Coaches may approach their team sponsors for additional funding but the sponsors are under no obligation to do so. Coaches may not approach another teams sponsor.
23. Teams may play outside Ontario or Canada as long as appropriate supervision is provided and the required paperwork is completed and approved by the Club and District.

Player Guidelines

The Collingwood United Soccer League subscribes to the philosophy that every person should have the opportunity to play at his/her maximum skill level.

1. Any player who wishes to try out for a rep team may attend the try outs for a division in their own age group or higher. If he/she is trying out for a higher age division but still wishes to be considered for a team in his/her own age group (in the event they are cut) he/she must also attend try outs for their own age division team as well.  If try-outs, for both divisions, are on the same night, the older division Coach should try to make a decision, in the best interest of the player, in a timely decision on the acceptance (or not) of player. No positions are guaranteed. The players must also fill out a ‘Playing Up’ form.

2. A maximum of three (3) under age players are allowed per team if there is a team in the lower age group.

3. A player can only be ‘called up’ to a maximum of 3 times per season to his/her next level and a courtesy call to his/her coach is recommended. In the event of a game conflict, call-ups can only be done with the approval of both coaches.  Names of all perspective ‘call up’ players must be handed into the office. These players must pay the associated ‘call up fee’ of $5.00.

4. All candidates for Travel teams must be registered with payment, and have no outstanding financial obligations to the club, before attending any try-out session. Any player participating in both the house league and travel team program must pay for both registration fees.

5. All traveling Collingwood Teams are to be called -  Collingwood United

6. All game offences must be reported to the Office to be re-directed to the Head Referee and Technical Director. Local discipline must be forwarded to the discipline chairperson of the CUSC. Local discipline, if required, will follow the CUSC policies for discipline and the OSA recommended guidelines.

7. Players must understand their responsibilities as representatives of the Club and of Collingwood whenever they are in uniform at the field or visiting another community.

8. Players registering after the District deadline are obligated to pay both a late fee to the CUSC and any additional late fees incurred beyond our regular Club fees.

9. Players who cannot financially afford to pay travel team registration fees should make a request for subsidy to the Board.

Conduct of the Bus

The urgency of the matter of proper conduct on the bus should be explained to each player thoroughly.  At least one coach or an officially recognized adult will ride with the players on the bus. This adult is solely responsible for the good conduct of each player. Players who cannot behave in an appropriate way risk being benched, suspended from future bus usage or dismissal from the team. The bus driver is not responsible for players conduct, but is the final arbiter for what is unacceptable. The driver must know which adult is in charge.

1. Within reasonable limits, players should remain seated during the trip.

2. Players must show respect of private property (i.e. bus) and the private property of team mates.

3. Absolutely nothing is to be thrown out of the window of the bus.

4. Garbage must be collected and removed from the bus at the end of the trip. The adult in charge is responsible for making sure this happens.

5. No excessive loud, rude or obnoxious behavior.

6. Only team members and immediate family members can ride on the bus. A waiver must be signed by anyone, other than players, getting on the bus or, in the event they are under 19, their parent or guardian. Any exceptions to this rule must be cleared through the Club.
